Endings

A baby is born. In a flash, it sees its whole life, condensed into an instant and thrust upon them. It cries as it’s placed in the mother’s embrace. The warmth is soothing, and the vision is gone. The baby is destined to live the rest of its life not knowing where it will go or now it will get there, but it will go, and it will arrive. As things begin, things also end. The baby’s birth correlates to the decline of the father’s job, his health, his presence. He leaves just as the baby is understanding it’s world. Just in time for it to understand his leaving. There’s nothing to be done. And the baby has grown into a child. They are not yet able to understand the nature of beginnings, or ends, but they will. As things end, they also begin. As the child becomes a new adult, their time at home ends. Their home has changed, but it always felt the same. Leaving it is terrifying, the unknown world waiting for them. There’s an eager energy behind the fright. Somehow, they can tell that

Derrick drove down the highway and smoked constantly. He was heated, angry, and needed to take the edge off. The smoking helped slow him down, but he shill thought hard about his problems. His wife had cheated on him and wanted to leave now. He didn’t exactly want to let her but also didn’t know how to say no. It just made him angry, and he didn’t want to hit her, so he drove away. Now he was speeding halfway to the coast and didn’t want to stop. He loved her but she angered him. She knew how to get under his skin and drive him mad. When the ocean came into view, he finally slowed down, coming to halt in a gravel parking lot next to the sand. His anger was still red and rising, so he slammed the door and ran to the waves, ripping off his shirt on the way and diving into the waves, swimming out into the water. She said that she loved him, but he didn’t make her happy. And he loved her, and she made him happy, and he didn’t understand. The salt stung his eyes as the waves crashed

Diego rubbed his jaw as he sat at the kitchen table. It was hot and the fans were all blowing, but it was still hot. His sister stood by the sink, looking at his with worry. “Your dentist visit was okay?” she asked. He nodded, stretching his jaw. “That laughing gas stuff was great,” he started. “The doctor was right, it didn’t hurt at all!” “So your tooth was rotten?” she asked suspiciously. Diego paused, sitting up straight. He spoke with a level voice now. “Here’s the thing. The doctor said that the tooth wasn’t rotten. It was a fake, and something got wedged under it causing the pain. Time was running out. Lara needed to get out and find her way home, but everything was working against her. The rooms around her felt like a maze, even though it was just someone’s grand mansion. The paintings on the wall seemed to laugh at her as she dashed down hall after hall. There was an inkling of fear growing in her mind, that little shred of doubt and worry, and it started planting ideas in her mind. What if she started knocking over vases, made music of the shattering porcelain. It’d be a way of knowing where she had been already, but it also would anger the guests, which would lead to unknown consequences. She decided, firmly, that she would do no such thing. It was a bright and sunny day and Jacob was at work, behind a counter, sighing. He would have rather been outside, or at home. But in order to eat you needed to work, so he worked and he hated it. His job wasn’t hard, which was something he loved in the beginning, but despised in the present. There wasn’t much to do, other than stand here, waiting for a customer wander in. At the end of his shift he dusted and wiped the counter, but that was it. He stood there, thinking about how much capitalism sucked and how he wished everyone could have food and shelter for free in the world, and sometimes he left his thoughts to look out at the store. The store was colorful, which he liked, but only a little bit. It was a glass shop, full of antiques and fresh works alike. Some pieces were handmade by glassblowing apprentices and looked like weird art projects all twisted and warped. The lost soul wandered, trying to find its way. It was scared, and lonely, and plagued with amnesia. It searched for its memories, its life, its reason for hanging on to the mortal plain. Sometimes it would come close, find a discarded garment or piece of street art that would stir something inside their withering psyche. But there was never a moment of breakthrough, of suddenly remembering that which was lost. It wandered aimlessly was ever alone. It knew that people were around, that people still existed in the world, but it could not see them. It didn’t know if it was a result of being a spirit, or a guard created in their own head. Seeing people would alarm them and make it hard to explore, so it was good that none were visible. There came a day when the wandering spirit happened upon a crime scene. They could see the body, lifeless and laying on the ground. There was no sigh of a lingering spirit, yet this spirit was enamored with the dead man. Looking at him felt like looking

As I walked into the bar I had a sense that something was about to happen. This was my usual stomping ground and I knew the terrain well, but today things were off. Different. There was a kid, a young guitar player that did the music some nights of the week. And he was here, hours before his show. I got my usual drink and sat down; I wanted a seat near him so I could eavesdrop and listen. The drink was cold in my hand, reminding me to drink it and I took a swig and turned my ear to the conversation. He was saying that he had became the special man of this place, and he was saying that there’d be no nightlife without him. I didn’t agree with that argument, but I wasn’t in a place to speak up. So I sipped my drink and listened further. He referred to the bar patrons when he said ‘we bitched about his fans’ and went on to explain that his groupies deserved VIP seating to separate them from the rest of the bar crowd. The leopard carried a dead rabbit in its maw. It wasn’t much, but it was something. She brought it to her den and dropped it. Her thin kit mewed and ran out, jumping on the fresh meat. The mother was thin too, and she lay down, licking her daughter. She was presented with a hard choice: take most of the meal for herself and hope it gives her the strength to catch larger game, or let her young have a full belly instead of ending yet another day hungry. Her stomach growled, yet she waited for the kit to finish.

She was nervous as she looked over at her date. Her date didn’t seem as nervous. They leaned forward and sucked on their shake, eyes drifting to the side as they wandered in their head. “So, have you been on the app long?” she asked them. It was a stupid question, and she knew it, but it popped into her head and was spit out before review. They took it fine, shrugging. “Yeah. Doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. But it’s been a couple months.” She didn’t like this answer, although she wasn’t sure why. “I haven’t been on it long. Do you go on a lot of dates like this?” They had suggested this little ice cream shop, and she wondered if it was their favorite. She pictured them sitting here with other girls, and boys, and talking to them casually like this, seemingly unfazed or uncaring at the person across them. “Not really. Just a few. I wake up with a start, jolted, like something had forced me into the other side. The bad dream still clung to my senses, keeping me at high alert in this late hour. I feel groggy, but have the urge to move. Across the room, my closet door rattles. And then, a rap-rap-rap at the door. Fear ignites a fire in my body. I’m up and moving, out of my bedroom and into the hallway. I realize quickly that this isn’t my hallway. It stretches on, far ahead of me, and turns at random times. I move quickly, crossing the distance and following the carpet. Stopping at an intersection, I hear a rap-rap-rap at the door beside me. Freezing, I wait to see what happens. The door knob starts to turn, and I run for it, knowing what kind of demon is on the other side. I can feel time passing as I search, as I run down path after path. As I stop to catch my breath, I hear the rap-rap-rap near me again. Every time, without fail, it’s catching up to me quickly. No sooner than I recover, I’m running again.
